Distillery 031 was founded in 2008 in Durban by Andrew Rall. The name Distillery 031 was chosen in reference to Durban’s dialing code.  To Andrew Durban is a place of eclectic energy, amazing people, and a climate that is ripe with creative opportunities, a place that he wholeheartedly calls home. As founder of Distillery 031, Andrew is passionate about creating craft spirits that offer you a distinctly Durban flavour. This unique city holds a gritty charm that reflects the authentic in all of us. Her down-to-earth beauty is familiar, yet still mesmerizing and manages to capture the collective energy of so many colourful cultures and individuals that live here. Firmly rooted in Africa, the diversity of its population brings together a unique mash-up of music, traditions, foods and language, and the resulting fusion is a charisma and character that is hard to find anywhere else. The secret is that the city is filled with fascinating juxtapositions that complement each other and thrive in one of the most affable, all-year-round climates in the world.

Andrew’s journey began in 2000 after a trip to Scotland left him intrigued by the distillation process, and interested in the wide variety of flavours that could come from different single malts. Rum was always Andrew’s drink of choice and on a trip to the US he discovered premium aged rums. In 2007, Andrew converted his garden cottage into a tiny distillery, got a home distiller’s licence and began experimenting in a land that is one of the largest sugar cane producers in the world.

Andrew’s fascination with craft spirits took him to the UK, France, Norway, Brazil and the USA, where he explored very different approaches to spirits. The tiny but growing craft sprit movement, which mirrored the craft beer revolution, caught Andrew’s attention. Having perfected recipes for an initial range of spirits, Andrew had to decide whether distilling was going to be anything more than a hobby.  It was an easy decision and so he began looking for a home for Distillery 031. “Station Drive was the perfect home for the distillery and complemented my vision for Distillery 031, which is to capture the essence of contemporary Durban in the spirits we produce … Durban Distilled.”

Durban Dry Gin

Durban Dry Gin is a classic London Dry style gin, with a twist – our gin is made with a blend of 10 botanicals including African Rosehip. The juniper forward flavour is able to shine when you mix it with a premium Indian Tonic water.

Durban Dry Gin has a strong citrus nose with distinctive but subtle juniper coming through. There’s a ‘sweetness’ and a distinct floral character in the background not found in most London Dry gins. The palate is deliciously oily and thick, covering the tongue thoroughly. At first, on the tip of your tongue, juniper hits you square in the palate – nice and fresh. The middle has a nice build, with a touch of a floral nature orris root, cardamon & African rosehip. Lemon follows before giving way to a touch of heat, juniper in the back of the mouth with subtle pepper and cassia bark on the finish.

It is a well-rounded Classic London style gin. Both by name and by nature, Durban Dry Gin pays tribute to the beautiful city that they call home. Furthermore, when designing the labels, we drew on Durban’s lush tropical foliage which provided inspiration for the illustration.

D'Urban Barrel Aged Gin

A first for South Africa, D’Urban Barrel Aged Gin is a London Dry style gin hand crafted with a blend of botanicals, including African rosehip, then aged in French oak barrels. D’Urban Barrel Aged Gin is aged for a limited time to retain the freshness that characterises a good gin.

This unmistakeable gin has a subtle citrus nose, with juniper and some of the warmth of oak coming through. The palate is smooth, oily and thick, covering the tongue thoroughly. It begins on the tip of the tongue with the freshness of juniper. The middle has a nice build, with a touch of florals, natural orris root, cardamom & African rosehip. Subtle citrus follows, then gives way to a subtle spiciness in the back of the mouth, imparted by the French Oak.

The oak mellows the spirit, generating tannins that transmit a light sweetness combined with vanillins and fruity flavours. It adds a hint of toasted almond flavour to the finish.

Heart of Darkness

This all natural liqueur is hand crafted with ethically sourced, AA Grade, Single Origin, Arabica Coffee from the Meru region in Tanzania. The speciality coffee beans used to make Heart of Darkness are grown at high altitude on the slopes of Mt Meru and are carefully chosen for their full body and rich flavour.

Caramel and sweet molasses on the nose. Bright and vibrant with fruit and acidity levels that are less pronounced than many other African coffees. The medium roast beans deliver a complex taste profile with orange-peel zest and vanilla to start. As the flavour develops on the palate, notes of biscuits and stewed fruit begin to emerge followed by fondant chocolate sweetness. Full bodied and intense with a creamy mouth feel and smooth finish.
